    SEATTLE DISTRICTS NOW!
Petitions are being circulated now on behalf of a proposed Charter Amendment that would alter the method by which City Council members are elected. The proposed amendment would replace the current system, in which the nine Council members are all elected at large, to one that would establish nine numbered, geographical districts throughout Seattle, each of which would elect one resident to represent the district on the City Council. Proponents claim that this district system would "bring the City Council closer to the people. ..lower the cost of campaigns ...give neighborhoods and ordinary individuals a stronger voice...and encourage continuity by...staggered terms of office." bit of history: The Statue of Lenin

Poprad, Slovakia is the place, 1978 the year our story begins. Emil Venkov won a commission to sculpt and cast a bronze statue of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Russian revolutionary leader. He worked for ten years, finishing in 1988 - just in time for the regime to collapse. Demand for Lenin bronzes was nil, with the exception of visiting American teacher Lewis Carpenter. He was intrigued by the bold and unusual design, Lenin striding out of - what - rifles, flames, wheat? Carpenter decided to take the statue home with him, a decoration for a Slovakian restaurant maybe. He decided big time. He mortgaged his house, bought the statue for $13,000, then paid $28,000 to truck it to Scandinavia and ship it via the Panama Canal to Washington state. Carpenter was killed in a car accident in 1994 and his mother, Lydia, was left with a seven-ton Lenin in her Issaquah back pasture. Lydia called Carpenter's Fremont sculptor-friend, Peter Bevis. Bevis and the Fremont Artwalk Committee were looking for something big to kick off their event. Lenin was just certainly that. After much welding and grinding and banging at Bevis' Fine Arts Foundry Lenin was ready to thrust his way into Fremont history, being unveiled at Artwalk amid much carping, griping, and fist banging from critics and former countrymen who remembered Lenin as something other than heavy-duty art. Lenin is for sale. For a mere $250,000 (obo), you too can join Lenin's well-traveled history.

    The ED's Report

When last I reported back in September, the call for volunteers to mind the Chamber booth at Oktoberfest was going out. It was handsomely answered by that sturdy Chamber cadre, George Heideman, Russ Mead, Lillian Cawdry, Jeanne Muir, Marko Tubic, and Toby Wilkins, ably augmented by Steve Mansur, from Anderson's Business Graphics, and Wanda and Anita Elder, from the ED's household. I again publicly thank these good folks who responded.
A lot has happened since then. The Board has met twice. In September we revisited the questions of Noise, Trash, and Tippling (thus the TNT Committee created by the president) especially along N. 36th that had been raised by community complaints. These are ongoing problems and a work-in- progress. James Weimann of the Ballroom was tapped to coordinate a common effort among Class H establishments and the Board awaits his report.
The Board officially set the Chamber fiscal year as July 1 to June 30 to better match the funding realities of Oktoberfest, our chief source of operating funds. The Board ordered a thorough accounting of Chamber fiscal accounts as well, in preparation for filing of the organization's 990 returns. The IRS confirmed our 501 (c) (6), non-profit designation.

With many thanks to our long-time hostess for our early-morning meetings, Erin Kohlenberg, and Fremont Classic Pizza, the Board set about looking for a new home. Thanks to Suzie Burke and Paul Nordstrand, we found one: History House. Same time: 8AM, the last Wednesday of each month. Meetings are open. Come and participate.

The in-depth discussion of the proposed work on both the Aurora and the Fremont Bridges, and the very real impacts on the community was the subject of our September General Meeting. Effects of this work as it is being proposed and modified on Fremont businesses is something every resident and business owner must keep current on. The work is years away, but groundwork for it is being laid now. Be alert; be informed. Share information and concerns with us, as the Chamber will with you.

Fremont, Wallingford, and Greater University Chambers came together to host a Tri-Chamber Political Mixer, where more "Transportation Issues" were chewed over with pro- and opponents. Monorail, Referendum 51, and the Aurora Avenue corridor, along with munchies and potables, were on the bill of fare. The forty or so attendees pronounced the offerings toothsome, so much as that the three Chambers are planning to make the collective gatherings a regular annual - if not biannual - events. And we are inviting the Ballard Chamber to join in. Maybe something fun in early summer, then something more serious in the fall.

Next Board meeting has been reserved for Strategic Planning - what do we want to do next, why, with what resources, what new directions, what improvements to ongoing offerings. Bring your best ideas, cherished projects, harbored gripes, and fondest hopes, and join us at 8AM, Wednesday, November 27, at History House. The coffee will be on.
