Delayed (as all road projects have been) by the concrete strike this past summer, you'll want to attend this meeting to learn the status of the Bridge Approach Replacement and when we switch sides and hopefully start the second half of the second phase of the project. Come ready to learn, and ask your questions.

Fremont Bridge Project Update

The new concrete deck on the east side of the bridge approach was poured over the last few weeks (once the concrete strike ended), mostly between midnight and 6AM. A new barrier along the north edge of the approaches will be installed over the next two weeks. Lifted into place by cranes, the barrier comes in 30-35 long sections of pre-cast concrete, each about three-and-half feet high. The style of the barrier follows that of the bridge itself, with architectural detailing typical of the early 1900's. Next lighting will be installed and forms built for the new east-side sidewalk.

A date has yet to be set for the shift of traffic from the west side of the approaches to the east side, but it is likely to take place near the end of October. When this shift to the east occurs, traffic flow will remain the same, with one vehicular lane in each direction and a shared bicycle/pedestrian path, all on the new east side of the approaches. There will still be no turns permitted at 34th Street for northbound vehicles, as the ramp leading onto east-bound 34th Street will remain under construction for several months.

For More Info - please call SDOT Project Manager Lorelei Mesic at 206/684-5178 or lorelei.mesic@seattle.gov or Art Brochet at
206/547-1008 or art@muirpr.com. The project web address is: www.seattle.gov/fremontbridge

Matter Of The Minutes

Highlights from the August 30, 2006 Board Meeting

Wallingford Boys & Girls Club Capital Campaign -
Suzie Burke is helping raise money to repair and restore the Wally Boys original building on 45th Street near Stone Way. They have been renting space, using money from the programs budget, and want to return to their home. This is OUR club and deserves our support. Suzie brought a MOTION to the Board to pledge $10,000 to be paid over a 5-year period, with the money coming from contributions from our membership and deposited in a separate bank account strictly for this purpose. Anne Helmholz suggested a friendly amendment that we challenge other chambers and local organizations to match us and make their own pledges. MOTION APPROVED AS AMENDED.

Executive Director Group -
Anne volunteered to help Phil Megenhardt and Marko Tubic with interviews of Executive Director candidates. Interviews were held in September. Lillian Tangen, our temporary office manager, will leave her post on September 29th to take up another opportunity. We wish Lillian the very, very best and thank her for all the assistance she's given, and the endurance she exhibited through this summer.

Security -
DeeDee Footer reported on some activity - break-ins and stupid drunks - in August, as well as trouble at PCC with people walking out with alcohol. Security Meetings continue to be held monthly on the second Tuesday. A representative from the North Precinct and a police officer regularlary attend to listen to our concerns and help us find solutions. If you are interested in attending, please contact DeeDee.

Oktoberfest -
Phil gave us the latest update on last minute preparations for Oktoberfest, and Marko pleaded for volunteers to help staff the Chamber booth. Most importantly, Phil reported that they will gain access under the Bridge on Oktoberfest weekend to allow Adobe employees to exit on Friday night without driving through the festival and as a way for vendors and bands to load-in and out. A big THANK YOU to SDOT and Mowat for making this possible!

Head of the Lake Regatta -
This event, produced by Bold Hat Events & Festivals, will be held Nov 11 & 12. It has been expanded to two days. Discussion of the Fremont Yacht Club and their presence at the event was held. Kirby Lindsay promised to follow up on this.

Trick-or-Treat Funding Request -
Kirby submitted a request for Trick-or-Treat In Fremont. She asked reimbursement of printing costs associated with the event which involves over 100 Fremont restaurants and retailers every year and invites children, accompanied by adults, to stroll from business to business on Halloween. She asked for up to $300. REQUEST APPROVED.

History House Funding Request -
Paul Nordstrand presented a request for $1500 to cover costs for providing a community meeting space for "free" to a wide variety of neighborhood organizations, including the Chamber. This is an annual request for Oktoberfest funds, and the Board APPROVED the REQUEST.
